Avni Spahiu was born on 12 March 1953 in the town of Mitrovica, Kosovo. He worked as a journalist, human rights activist and was the head of Radio Television of Kosovo. Currently he is the ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to the United States. The Embassy of Kosovo in Washington, DC opened in 2008.[1]
Avni Spahiu graduated from University of Prishtina in 1986, with a degree in Literature. From 1999 to 2000, he was Editor in Chief of Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK). Then from 2002 till 2003, he was Director of RTK.[2]
Kosovo is the subject of a territorial dispute between the Republic of Serbia and the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo. The latter declared independence on 17 February 2008, while Serbia claims it as part of its own sovereign territory. Its independence is recognised by 86 UN member states.
